Project Title: Bent Sticks and Pointy Things; or, how making bows rescued me from World of warcraft Maker Name: Riley Harrison Maker Biography: My many years of experience waiting tables, selling books, writing code, 3D Modeling, and serving coffee have prepared me not in the slightest to become a Bowyer, one who makes bows. Completion Date: First bow completed July of 2009; bow number 13 completed Sunday, september 5th Materials used: red oak, hickory, maple, other dark hardwoods that looked pretty but I can't identify, tightbond 3 wood glue, Dacron b45 and b50 bow string, leather, canvas, polyurethane stain, and a hand made black stain made from soaking steel wool in vinegar to create iron acetate, and then painting that on top of red oak that had been painted with extra strong black tea. Process/function: During summer vacation, I decided I wanted to do something other than grind another WOW character. I looked up "how to make a bow" online, and found helpful tutorials. I made my first bow for under $10 in tools and materials, shot it, and it broke. Ditto the second. The third one didn't break, and I've had several winners since then. It's addictive.
